COMMISSIONED BY TATE COLLECTIVE TO CREATE A PIECE OF HENNA ART BASED ON A PIECE FROM THE TATE COLLECTION - FOR WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH
Henna Artist for Tate Collective

"This henna design is in response to the piece 'Something Old Something New' by Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian. I was inspired by the geometry in her work, and how beautifully the mirrors reflected light. In this piece, Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian surrounded a broken tile with mirror art. The leaves decorating the tile drew my attention to the contrast between the sharp geometry of the mirrors and the gentleness of the traditional tile. D Both have history and craftsmanship behind them, yet the contrast feels so clear. I melded these contrasting aesthetics, focusing on creating a dense mosaic-like palm design, using both brown henna and jagua henna. Using henna in this creative process made me think about the history of henna, and how cultural crafts like henna art and mirror art must be preserved - by teaching it to each new generation and allowing them to reinvent it in their own image." - Ruqaiyyah
